Insured medical footcare at BonFeet Footcare

What is insured foot care?

Insured foot care is a treatment fully covered by the basic health insurance for people with an increased risk of foot wounds. The goal is to prevent wounds and complications that could lead to amputations.

Not all treatments performed by a medical pedicure are covered. You are only entitled to reimbursement from the basic insurance for medically necessary foot care if you have a chronic condition and an increased risk of foot wounds.

How can I qualify?

To qualify for insured foot care, you must first visit a podiatrist with a referral from your general practitioner, diabetes nurse, or primary care professional (POH).

After a thorough examination, the podiatrist will determine your care profile and create a personal treatment plan. This plan shows whether you need medically necessary foot care. Only medically necessary foot care is reimbursed by your insurance.

Insured foot care focuses only on areas of the foot where wounds may develop. Everything else falls under additional care (“meerzorg”). This part you pay for yourself.

Who is it for?

Insured foot care is for people with care profiles 2, 3, or 4, as determined by a podiatrist. These are individuals with an increased risk of foot wounds, such as:

  • Diabetes type 1 or 2
  • Neurological conditions (e.g., Parkinson’s, MS)
  • Reduced circulation or loss of sensation
  • Chronic illnesses that slow wound healing

What is treated?

Insured foot care focuses only on areas where wounds may develop:

  • Corns and calluses that pose a risk of wounds
  • Pathological nails that could cause wounds

Anything that does not pose a wound risk, such as trimming healthy nails or dry calluses that are not dangerous, falls under additional care (“meerzorg”) and is not covered. An additional fee applies for this care. This will be discussed during your first appointment, so you can decide if you would like to add this care to your treatment.
